Canastota
Fire Department
Serving the village for nearly 150 years, the Canastota Fire Department
consists of a volunteer force of 60-65 individuals. The force responds
to up to 300 calls per year. Prospective members may stop by the fire
house
on any Wednesday night between 6:30-9:30 pm or e-mail Lt. John Palamara

Greater
Lenox Ambulance Service
Offering basic and advanced life support services, GLAS serves the
towns of Licoln and Lenox. Volunteers are recruited to supplement
the salaried staff. Anyone interested in learning more about
opportunities
at GLAS can call 697-8873.
Wanderers'
Rest Humane Association
This shelter serves as Madison County's official home for lost and
orphaned animals. Please consider adopting a pet today or making a
donation
to support our furry friends. Volunteers are always needed to
help
care for the animals.
OPERATION WILD CATS

Education in Canastota
Public Schools
The Canastota School District is comprised of two elementary schools,
one middle school, and one senior high school. A variety of courses are
offered to satisfy the NYS Regents requirements. Occupational education
is also available through the BOCES system. Approximately 1600 students
attend schools in the village, with an average graduating class of
about
120 students. Academics are enhanced by music, drama, and
athletic
programs.
Higher Education
The Utica School of Commerce maintains a branch campus in Canastota to provide
residents
with an opportunity to sharpen their skills and to further their
education.
Several other colleges and universities are located within 25 miles of
the village, including Syracuse University, Utica College, Hamilton
College,
Mohawk Valley Community College, Cazenovia College, SUNY Morrisville,
and
the SUNY Institute of Technology.

Canastota Canal Town Museum, 122 Canal
Street
Housed in one of the oldest structures in the village, the museum
exhibits
artifacts and authentic canal memorabilia. Included in the museum's
collection
are pictures, slides, books, cemetary files, news clippings, and local
genealogy information.

The Great Swamp Conservancy, 8375 N. Main St.
The GSC's purpose is to foster environmental education, to preserve
biological diversity and to conserve and manage natural resources in
the
Oneida Lake and Lake Ontario Watersheds. The GSC hosts a variety of
educational
and recreational programs for area residents and visitors. A natural
and
local history museum is underway at the site, as is a trail system with
observation stations which guests may wander from sunrise to sunset.

International
Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum
Celebrating Canastota's legacy of raising boxing champions, the
International
Boxing Hall of Fame held its first ribbon cutting and induction
ceremonies
in 1989. Since then, parades of champions have visited Canastota for
the
annual June inductions.

of Commerce
Canastota is proud to open its arms to new businesses and
residents.
The Chamber of Commerce provides information about the local community
to any interested party. The chamber is open 8:00-5:00, Monday through

Lions Club
Operating under the auspices of Helen Keller, this group
concerns
itself with helping the blind/visually impaired and the deaf/hearing
impaired.
The Lions also sponsor the QUEST program, aimed at educating fifth
graders
about drug abuse and self-esteem. Membership is open to men and women
who
have an interest in community service.
The Canastota club began in 1947 and now boasts a
membership of over 60 individuals. The group meets at 7:00 pm on the
2nd
and 4th Mondays of the month at Graziano's Casa Mia Restaurant. For

Rotary
Club
Providing humanitarian service, encouraging high ethical
standards
in all vocations, and promoting goodwill and peace in the world are
among
the goals of this international service organization. The Club
sponsors
a foreign exchange program, supports the Polio-Plus vaccination program
in developing countries, and participates in literacy projects and the
Gift of Life Program.
Canastota's Club was established in 1956 and currently consists
of 31 community-minded professionals. The local club sponsors area
blood
drives, awards "Roses to the Living" to local activists, and hosts an
annual
Christmas party for disadvantaged youths. The Club hopes to establish a
Rotary Park in the village in the near future. Its fundraisers include
the Fall Garage Sale, Rose Sale, and the Election Day Pancake
Supper.
Membership in the club is by invitation and is limited so as
to fairly represent each type of business in the community. The club
meets
at the Rusty Rail Restaurant at 12:10 on Monday afternoons. For more

Bridge players meet at the Canastota Public Library on Thursdays from
